HMP Chelmsford
The film “Porridge”, a spin-off of the popular British sitcom, was partially filmed at HMP Chelmsford in Essex. The prison was undergoing renovations after a fire and the film crew used the facility, including the hospital block which served as their administrative offices.
HMP Chelmsford is a men’s prison and young offender institution. Nearby you’ll find the Essex Police Museum, which showcases over 25,000 artefacts detailing the history of policing in Essex since 1840 – look out for the classic 1960s Noddy Bike on display! Visitors can enter for free on Saturdays.
