Audley End House in Essex served as a prominent filming location for The Crown, portraying various royal settings such as Balmoral Castle, Windsor Castle, and even Eton College in different series. The house’s grand Jacobean architecture and interiors, including the Great Hall and library, were frequently used for filming scenes featuring the young princesses Elizabeth and Margaret.
Hylands House, Chelmsford
In season three of “The Crown,” Hylands House in Chelmsford, Essex, was used to depict the White House, specifically for scenes featuring Princess Margaret’s (Helena Bonham Carter) visit to the United States and her meeting with President Lyndon B. Johnson. The stately home’s architecture, particularly its white pillars and expansive grounds, made it a convincing stand-in for the American presidential residence.

Southend Airport
One of the many gateways in and out of Essex, London Southend Airport has flights to over 200 worldwide destinations. Airlines including EasyJet, Ryanair, Emirates and British Airways operate from here. The airport is easily accessible, with its own train station just metres from the entrance, or take the M25 if travelling by car. London Southend Airport is also home to the Vulcan bomber – keep an eye out for event days in which you can visit the historic aircraft! If you’re looking for a bite to eat, the 1935 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar at the Holiday Inn Southend is a fantastic dining experience with views of the places taking off and landing at the airport.
