Manningtree & Mistley
Manningtree and Mistley offer a captivating blend of dark history and architectural ambition. Did you know Manningtree holds the title of the smallest town in England?
In the 1640s, this area served as the grim headquarters for Matthew Hopkins, the self-proclaimed “Witchfinder General,” whose brutal accusations led to numerous executions and left behind a legacy of haunted landmarks.
Visitors can still see the Mistley Thorn Hotel, a historic 1723 coaching inn where Hopkins once stayed, or seek out “Old Knobbley,” an ancient oak tree over 800 years old hidden in nearby woodland. The landscape is further defined by Richard Rigby’s failed 18th-century dream of creating a grand spa town; today, all that remains of his vision are the neoclassical Mistley Towers, designed by the renowned Robert Adam, and the symbolic Swan Fountain.
