Set in 2009, Essex Girls is a coming-of-age drama which follows the story of Bisola as she navigates growing up as a black girl in Benfleet.
The short film explores how it feels to be a Black girl in a totally white space, how to find self-love in a sphere that doesn’t always accommodate you and the magical power of female friendships. The comedy-drama, was set and filmed in Essex, specifically Weald Country Park and Southend.

Where can i visit?

Enjoy over 520 acres of woodland, lakes, meadows, open grassland and spectacular views at Weald Country Park in Brentwood. Back in the 12th century the park was once a medieval deer park, nowadays it’s famous for its diverse wildlife, including fallow deer, cattle, herons, mallard ducks and other water birds. Take a picnic, build dens, enjoy the accessible paths around the lake from the visitor centre, and not forgetting your four-legged friends – they will enjoy the park’s wide-open spaces, with taps and dog bowls available throughout. Weald Country Park is also home to the Stick Man play trail, which brings to life the popular book by Julia Donaldson.
